Rituals over rules

The easiest way I've found to build new habits

Hi there, and welcome to the very first letter from Snug. 🤍

I'm so happy you're here. I've been looking forward to creating this little space to share thoughts, rituals and the things I'm learning along the way.

One of the concepts I've been thinking about lately is habit stacking.

We hear about it all the time when talking about building new routines, but I don't think I truly experienced the power of it until becoming a parent.

When you're suddenly responsible for another little human, your days become filled with new routines; meals, naps, brushing tiny teeth, getting out the door. It sounds simple, but every week brings new needs, new rhythms and a constant need of adjusting your everyday routines.

If I want something to become part of my life, I can't rely on motivation - it has to be attached to something I'm already doing to stick.

When I first discovered functional mushrooms, I assumed the only options were powders or capsules.

Powders never really worked for me. I've never been much of a breakfast person, so I didn't have a natural way of adding them without ending up with a grainy matcha or coffee. Capsules felt easier, but somehow never became a consistent habit.

Then I discovered the liquid extracts, and I naturally started creating little duos throughout my day. Pairing them with routines I already had made them effortless to remember.

Here's what that looks like in my day:

Morning
My morning starts with a shower and getting dressed before I have a coffee while Brie eats breakfast and Pierre and I have a few quiet minutes together, before he heads to work.

The morning coffee has become the cue for my Morning Rhythm. I add Chaga and Shiitake to my coffee, and the habit takes care of itself. As a bonus, they don't change the flavour of my coffee at all (key!).

Midday
Most days I move my body in some way: strength training, pilates or my weekly HIIT class. I love to sweat it out and remind myself that I also can do hard things.

Before I head into the gym, I pop in for a coffee at the café next door. That coffee has become the cue for Cordyceps and Lion's Mane, and they've naturally become part of my ritual before moving my body and clear my mind for it.

Evening
After dinner I usually have a small bowl of yoghurt and berries. This is where I started having my creatine and now also add in Reishi and Maitake - my little signal that the day is winding down and a small ritual that feels like a treat before the evening.

The best part is that all of these moments already happen in my day, so adding the droplets doesn't really require any extra time or effort.

These daily moments and rituals are far from perfect, and they don't happen at exactly the same time every day. Some days the routine flows, other days everything shifts - and that's just the season I'm in.

The best rituals aren't the ones that take the most time. They're the ones that quietly become part of your day without you even thinking about it.

If this inspired you to create a few daily moments of your own, you'll find the bundles I've curated around my own daily rhythms at Snug - from Morning Rhythm to Clear Energy and Evening Reset.

- Until next time, Amanda🤍
